It is a great honour to be appointed Club Captain for 2025 and I would like to express my gratitude for trusting me in this role.
Barlaston Golf Club has been my sole golfing home, and I’m proud to say I have been a member for 20 years – in two spells. I first joined in 1991 with my brother, while my Father was already a member. Due to illness, I had to relinquish my membership in 2004; however, upon my retirement in 2018, I was delighted to re-join, and whilst I don’t play to the levels that I once did, I enjoy my golf as much as ever.
We pride ourselves on having the friendliest and most welcoming golf club in the area, and in my humble opinion, we boast the best members. Over the next year I’m hoping to play rounds of golf with as many of you as possible, and to represent you with passion and commitment at the monthly meetings I will attend with our Board. I am also eager to support and promote our Club throughout the year through teams, charity initiatives and social events.
I would like to extend my appreciation to our Club Manager, and to the members who volunteer for Committee work. I would also like to pay special tribute to our fantastic Greens Staff, Club Professional, House and Bar team, and back-office staff for their hard work in ensuring our Club runs smoothly and efficiently. Much of this effort goes unnoticed, yet we all benefit from their dedication.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank my predecessor, Mick Bailey for a successful 2024, and introduce our new Officials for the forthcoming year; Brent Hemmings – President, Cheryl Egerton – Lady Captain, and Darren Bishop – Vice Captain. I extend my best wishes to you all and look forward to working alongside you in the year ahead.
Our Club has a longstanding tradition of supporting charitable causes, and this year I have chosen the Douglas Macmillan Hospice as my Charity. My wife works for this organisation, and I’m sure many of us know someone who has benefited from the care and support they provide for local families in times of need. The Lady Captain has chosen Animal Lifeline Serendipity Kennels S-O-T as her Charity. I hope you will all support both Charities generously whenever possible.
Finally, I wish you all a most enjoyable and sociable golfing season.
Yours in golf.
Andy Woodhouse.
The club has a strong men’s section with over 500 members in a range between 18 and 80+ years of age. Golfers of all ages and abilities enjoy a full calendar of events hosted by the Club’s Handicap’s & Competitions Committee. The events which are mostly played on Sundays regularly attract more than 100 entries.
Great prize funds are on offer during the wide-ranging formats of events. Major competitions in the club are drawn events, if you enter one of these you put your name into a time zone, time zones are normally an hour and a quarter in length, and you can be drawn at any time during in the hour and quarter with anyone else who as entered. When entering other events, you can put your names down with anyone you wish, at whatever time wish, and that is who you will play with and when you play. Competition entries are managed via the BRS booking platform.
We also play four major knock events, three singles and one pairs event, for golfers of all abilities.
The club is very proud to have produced many fine golfers, the most notable being David Lynn, who is not only a past winner on the European Tour but also finished second in the 2012 PGA Championship behind Rory Mcllroy.
